Pathfinders Project Goes to Hollywood

And so it begins! We may not be abroad yet, but Wendy and Ben arrived in Los Angeles on the 16th for two weeks of service and training before we depart for Cambodia on July 31st. Michelle is still studying abroad in Ireland, so she’ll have to hit the ground running once she arrives!

During our time in Los Angeles, we are coming together as a team for the first time around service projects that give us a glimpse into the challenges faced by some Los Angeles residents. We are helping TreePeople preserve the natural habitat in the Santa Monica Mountains by planting oak trees and native bunch grasses and we are helping the Westside Food Bank box fresh produce donations for distribution to local social service agencies.

In addition to engaging in service each day, we are participating in cultural sensitivity, travel safety, and interfaith dialogue training in order to prepare for the incredible journey we have ahead of us. This preparation includes discussions and guided readings facilitated by the founder of Bridge of Life School, Pathfinders Project’s partner organization in Cambodia.

Near the end of our time in Los Angeles, on July 28, we will share our excitement with family, friends, and local humanists, atheists, and skeptics at a launch event at the Center for Inquiry – West’s Steve Allen Theater in Hollywood. The program will feature noteworthy special guests such as atheist YouTube comedian Mr. Deity, atheist/humanist a cappella group Voices of Reason, and singer/songwriters Gary Stockdale and Eric Schwartz. There may even be some close-up magic during the reception! If you are in the Los Angeles area or nearby, you don’t want to miss it.
