It is also a way of spending time and forgetting all your worries. The word comes from the Medieval Latin inter tenere, which means “holding inside.” This ties to the Indo-European root ten, which means to stretch. Consequently, entertainment tends to have a tendency towards transformation and a seemingly endless potential for creative remix across different media. This is evident in the way that many of the familiar forms we see as entertainment have long histories and are recognizable from a variety of sources.
